Marlborough's Finance Committee voted 4-0 to recommend a $4,050,000 "friendly" eminent domain purchase of 40 Lock Drive for a new Westside fire station. Mayor J. Christian Dumas's order also redirects $5,092,666 already set aside in a land account once earmarked for a different parcel, 100 Lock Drive, which the city abandoned.
Councilor Beidle questioned the "friendly" taking mechanism, told it meant the seller agreed to terms rather than the city condemning the property. Council President Ossing said a separate mitigation account, fed by projects including Green District and Pheasant Hill Retirement Community, holds nearly $4 million toward the station's roughly $35 million bond, estimated to cost the average taxpayer "$145 per year." The order now goes to the full City Council for a required two-thirds vote.
