Legislative committee approves Sam Boyd statue easement on 3-0 vote
MARLBOROUGH — October 16, 2023 — Marlborough committee advances bronze statue of city founder Sam Boyd. The Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee voted 3-0 to recommend order 23-108962, which packages an easement for Map 70, Parcel 126 at Main and South Bolton streets with a gift acceptance from the Marlborough Historical Society. Attorney Rowe, presenting for the society, said sculptor David Kapitanopoulos — who also created the city's shoe workers statue and the library animal sculptures — would cast the bronze, with installation targeted for fall 2024 to beat the 2025 start of Revolution 250 commemorations. Councilor Orem moved approval, calling himself "definitely in favor" of the project. Rowe acknowledged a "chicken and an egg" fundraising dynamic, but said the society has already secured substantial contributions and would coordinate siting with the city engineer and DPW.
