Marlborough School Committee adopts updated bullying policy, approves $1.36 million in federal grants

MARLBOROUGH — September 13, 2022 — Marlborough School Committee approves revised bullying policy and more than $1.36 million in federal grants at fall opener. The committee voted unanimously Tuesday to adopt amended Policy 1.300 on bullying prevention, adding a requirement that the district notify parents of targeted students about the state's problem resolution system "regardless of the outcome of the investigation" — language a Marlborough family had been pushing for since spring. Resident Kevin Maciuli, of 58 Ridge Road, told the board in public comment that the district's bullying intervention plan had gone unreviewed since 2015, with a 2010 version still on the district website as recently as this year, and said "I don't want anyone watching this meeting to think this committee has come even remotely close to doing its job." The committee separately approved three ESSA grants totaling $1,362,944 in Title I, III, and IV funding for FY23. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Scasa, in his first formal report, announced that approximately 60 new hires completed orientation and that two MHS seniors, Eduardo Castro and Celis Jamal, were named College Board National Hispanic Recognition Award recipients. Committee member Diaz reported the district added one bus driver since the prior meeting but lost a second candidate to personal circumstances, with no new CDL-licensed drivers expected until mid-October.
