Marlborough School Committee approves new Kane teacher, EL position for migrant students

MARLBOROUGH — August 2, 2023 — Marlborough adds two Kane teachers and Creole translators to absorb 25 newly enrolled migrant students. The School Committee unanimously approved Superintendent Mary Murphy's request for a new third-grade classroom teacher and an additional English Learner teacher at Kane Elementary, plus filling two budgeted translator slots — one Portuguese, one Spanish — and using grant funding for up to two Haitian Creole translators. Of about 30 anticipated school-age children living at the Holiday Inn under McKinney-Vento, 25 enrolled at an Aug. 1 registration event — 19 elementary, six secondary. Murphy said the state is projecting roughly $18,000 in supplemental per-pupil funding for each new student, which district finance leadership expects to cover the positions. "It was one of the most joyful nights that we have ever experienced," Murphy said. The committee also moved its August meeting to Tuesday, Aug. 29.
