Marlborough School Committee rejects MASC firearm-storage resolution, splits on preschool building aid

MARLBOROUGH — September 26, 2023 — Marlborough School Committee rejects firearm-storage resolution, strips preschools from MSBA cap-removal push. Members voted not to support a Framingham-sponsored MASC resolution that would have urged districts to warn parents about Massachusetts safe-storage law, calling it toothless and outside the schools' lane. The committee supported a Wachusett resolution to lift the $800 million annual MSBA funding cap but voted to strike a clause adding public preschools to MSBA-eligible programs, with the chair voting in opposition on the preschool point. Mr. LaFleur reported 12 NRT bus routes — six in Marlborough — have no permanent driver, leaving "two elementary routes 30 minutes or longer late to school on a daily basis." Mrs. Matthews was named MASC delegate, Ms. Hennessey alternate. The committee also accepted $1,596,624 in FY24 IDEA funding and $1,024,360 in Title I funding among six federal grants.
