Urban Affairs Committee backs Marlborough Hospital special permit 4-0

MARLBOROUGH — June 3, 2025 — Marlborough committee advances $100 million UMass Memorial hospital expansion. The City Council's Urban Affairs Committee voted 4-0 Tuesday to recommend a special permit for an 8,000-square-foot emergency department expansion, a new multidisciplinary clinic and a proton therapy center at Marlborough Hospital, growing ER treatment rooms from 13 to 27. Attorney Brian Falk told the committee the proton facility, pending state Determination of Need approval, would be the second operating in New England. Ellen Carlucci of UMass Memorial Marlborough Hospital said the ER already trends at 29,000 to 30,000 visits annually and projected roughly 300 proton therapy patients a year, or eight to 10 daily appointments. Impervious surface rises only from 48.6 to 49.2 percent. "Our ultimate goal is making sure our patients can safely get into the hospital," Carlucci said.
