Marlborough School Committee approves $66.7M FY22 budget, amended MHS course catalog

MARLBOROUGH — April 27, 2021 — Marlborough approves $66.7M school budget and saves Mandarin in MHS catalog rewrite. The School Committee voted unanimously April 27 to approve a $66,654,566 FY22 budget after a public hearing drew zero callers, sending the package to Mayor Arthur Vigeant and the City Council. Members then amended the Marlborough High School Program of Studies to retain Mandarin and the second-level architecture and manufacturing engineering courses that Principal Daniel Riley had proposed dropping, with member Mary Boyd-Heniger saying she was "personally taken aback" by "large swatches of courses that are disappearing." Riley cited eight student requests for Mandarin against nearly 40 for French. The committee also approved a modified MCAS testing schedule May 10-13 for grade 10 students and 27 grade 11 opt-ins, and accepted a DESE EL program review whose only finding was missing documentation in some student folders.
