Personnel Committee advances police chief, solicitor and Historical Commission appointments

MARLBOROUGH — January 31, 2022 — Marlborough Personnel Committee advances three appointments in under half an hour. The committee voted 3-0 on Jan. 31 to recommend a second four-year term for Police Chief David Giorgio, expiring Aug. 20, 2025; a three-year appointment of Jeremy McManus as Assistant Solicitor; and a three-year Historical Commission seat for Sarah Hough. Giorgio, first appointed in 2017, flagged staffing as his coming challenge, telling the committee the department expects six to eight retirements within six to eight months and has already conducted entry-level and lateral hiring rounds. He credited former Chief Mark Leonard with originating both the now-active traffic unit and the department's accreditation work. McManus, a 2017 Boston College Law graduate and former Essex County prosecutor with more than 30 OUI trials, joins from Melick & Porter; the committee suspended the rules to pass his order in one night. Councilor Sean Navin pressed Historical Commission nominee Hough — a state DMH procurement director and Plymouth native — on the future of the Walker Building after the library relocates; Hough declined to take a position, saying "compromise isn't always easier."
